Horse and Jockey Detail

A Bronze statue of a galloping horse and young jockey from around 140 BC. It is approximately life-size, 9.5 ft long and 7 ft high. The jockey is a boy 2.76 ft tall. He rides bareback without a saddle. He wears sandals and a short chiton.

The pieces were retrieved from a shipwreck off Cape Artemision in Euboea. The young jockey would have held the reins in his left hand and a whip in his right. The furrows on his face, especially on the forehead, reveal agony and passion. The work is known as the "Artemision Jockey." It was reassembled in 1971.
