View looking west from Old Testament Jericho at the "Mount of Temptation" (Jebel Quruntul). Late (not verifiable) Christian tradition places the temptation of Jesus to turn stones into bread at the Monastery half way up the cliffs and Satan’s offer to him of the kingdoms of the world at the top of the mountain (Matt 4:1–11).
