Seating Area 1

View from the Promontory Palace looking northeast at the circus and its seating area. There were twelve rows of seats along this east side. The circus could hold about 5,000 spectators.

Near the center of the image, the canopy protects some frescoes of wild animals and plants that decorated the wall of the circus/amphitheater. On the far right side of the image a shrine is visible.

During chariot races, the chariot would race towards the viewer from the left side of the image, turn (counterclockwise), and race away from the viewer in front of the viewing stands.
