View looking north from south of the Wadi Qilt at the north end of the Wilderness of Judah.

The hills are made of the infertile Senonian Chalk. This bleak and barren area was the area where Jesus fasted for forty days just after his baptism (Matt 4:1-11; Mark 1:12, 13; Luke 4:1-13).
