Caesarea Philippi Court of Pan and the Nymphs

View of the large “cave niche” and three small niches that were included in the Temple of Pan that was constructed here. Pan was a grotesque half-man and half-goat deity—the god of shepherds, mountains, forests, and wild animals. He chased women and nymphs and tried to lure them by playing his flute—including the nymph Echo who rejected him. As Pan chased her she fell off a cliff and her repeated cries were heard as she plunged down the precipice.
