View looking east at the foundation walls of houses that date from the first to the sixth century A.D. The thin walls of these houses gathered around a central courtyard (= insulae) indicate that they did not support a second story or heavy stone roofs. Instead, their roofs were probably composed of small timbers, branches, brush, mud, and plaster—see Mark 2:1–12.
In the distance are the salmon-colored domes of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Orthodox Capernaum.
