Open–Air Temple—Kalybe

View looking southwest at a structure located on the west side of the top of Sussita. This structure is over 10 ft. [3 m.] high and is built of basalt ashlars. Note the semicircular niche in the center of the structure. The excavators believe that a statue of the emperor stood in this niche—overlooking the whole forum—reminding the residents of Sussita of their ultimate benefactor. This type of structure is known as a kalybe.

This kalybe is located at the southwest corner of the forum, near the western gate of Sussita.
