Temple of Apollo

View looking north at the Temple of Apollo. The temple is set in a peristyle sanctuary—an area surrounded on three sides by colonnades. The staircase leads up to the temple that sat on a tall podium. Note the two still-standing columns on the podium.

In front of the temple is a column with a sundial on it as well as a marble altar. Right of center, a copy of a statue of Apollo is visible. In the background is snow-covered Mount Vesuvius.

This temple was built by the Samnites on a site that had earlier been set aside for worship by the Greeks and the Etruscans (ca. 6th century B.C.).
