Theater Interior

View of the large Theater at Pompeii. It was originally built in the second century B.C. and was remodeled in subsequent years. Part of the skene is visible on the left side of the image, the orchestra in the center, and the cavea (green grass/weeds) surrounding the orchestra.

Note the lower four wide "platforms" in a semi–circle around the orchestra. The elite of the city sat here on luxury furniture (chairs).

This theater was the first large public building to be excavated at Pompeii—beginning in A.D. 1764!
