Karakus Tumulus

View of the Karakus tumulus (burial mound). According to an inscription three females were buried here: the mother, daughter, and niece of the king. The question is, what king? Mithridates the first king of Commagene is usually thought to be the builder, but recent research suggests that Mithridates (ca. 31–20 B.C.) erected it.

Note the single column left of center and the two columns right of center.

The burial chamber within the tumulus was discovered in 1967 but it was empty.
