Retaining Wall

View looking northwest at the southeastern corner of the retaining wall that supported the platform on top of which the Temple of Athena stood.

Note how the stones have been carved. The stones have been well crafted along their edges (the margins of the stones). Note especially the well-carved area at the corner. Well-carved margins help align the stone. The rounded carved central area is called the “boss” of the stone.

In the upper right portion of the image, the acropolis of Priene is visible.
